Dering Building

175 Walnut Street

In 1896, Elmer Jacobs designed this Romanesque Revival building for Fred Dering in a very similar style to the Morris Building on High Street. While the building originally housed Dering’s harness and farm implement business, the coming of the automobile inspired Dering to change occupations and open a funeral business. Though the building still reads “DERING” and has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the business moved to the John Rogers House in 1965, where it still operates today.
